There is no secret that in order for your business to survive you need to improve it every day and your business skills as well. I have a perfect quote for it — “Change or die”. Any business, no matter how big it is, should have some information about itself on the web. As we know most people are active internet users and if they don’t know about something, they immediately start to look for some information about it on the web. They trust the Internet, in any case.

To have your own website dedicated to your business is a necessity nowadays. Nobody wants to work with somebody, who doesn’t even have a website.

If your business is still under development stage and you have a more important activity in parallel, you should still try to create a website. Sell your products and make this business your hobby. You will see that even a hobby can bring quite a good income today.

So if you are interested, I’m going to explain to you how it works.

Keep calm, It won’t be difficult =).

You need first to know:

You really do not have to be a programmer or web designer anymore to get your own online presence. Creating a website on the CMS as one of the ways to develop sites, even suitable for beginners! I would say the easiest one.

A CMS or content management system is so versatile that it fits beginners and experienced web developers.

It’s a software application that makes it easy to create and manage online content. Most of them are open source and free to use.

If you know the basics of HTML, CSS or PHP, this is an advantage for you. It is not a big problem if you do not know because these platforms are very intuitive.

Let’s see a statistic of the most popular CMS platform of 2018 from Builtwith:

Based on this diagram, our leader is WordPress. I think it has to do with the fact that it is relatively easy to handle. Here you install a ready-made theme and then adjust the presentation via the design options.

Hosting, domain, email, installation, and support depend on your budget and knowledge. Moreover, if you do everything yourself, you can create a page relatively cheaply (even including the online shop).

I suggest you a guide on how to create and configure a site using WordPress.

Let’s begin!

1 — Register a domain
A domain is the name of your website. It has to be unique and communicate the brand of your company.

The easiest way to find and register a domain is to go to a domain registrar. A domain registrar lets you register your domain name either through annual contracts or a long-term contract.

Here are some reputable domain registrars to consider.

  • Domain.com.
  • GoDaddy.com.
  • Namecheap.com.
  • Bluehost.com.
  • HostGator.com.
  • Name.com.
  • Register.com and many more.

2 — Buy web hosting

Hosting — is a service that allows organizations and individuals to post a website or web page onto the Internet.

In short, hosting is necessary in order to provide uninterrupted round-the-clock access to the site. A web host is a large computer that stores your websites. Some big companies – like Amazon – own and manage their web servers.

Perhaps you heard already that it can cost you some money, but not so much as you think. Especially, the cost of hosting depends partly on how large the site will turn out.

Here check some newbies-friendly hosting services:

  • Wix.com
  • BoldGrid.com
  • Bluehost.com
  • InMotionHosting.com
  • iPage.com
  • SiteGround.com

3 — Create a website with CMS

The process of developing a site on a CMS is not just and clicking the keyboard and chaotic driving the mouse cursor around the monitor screen. It consists of several stages, only the consistent implementation of which will lead you to the desired result – your own site!

Required skills and tools:

Knowledge: Basic operation of computer and internet; HTML, CSS, and PHP (not obligatory, but it is better if you know the basics).

Tools: WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal.

My personal recommendation is WordPress, and as statistic shows, I’m not the only one. Obviously, many powerful big websites prefer WordPress for its simplicity.

Step 1: Locate the WordPress installer in your web hosting panel.

Example: SiteGround cPanel Dashboard.

Step 2: Install WordPress through the installer.

Configure the options as follows, leave other fields in the default configuration and click Install.

If you were successful in the last steps, well done.

Sign up now on your WordPress website. Your site’s sign-in page looks like wp-login.php after you’ve customized the site URL you’ve specified.

Step 3: Install a theme and some important plugins.

Next, you need to choose a design and the necessary plugins. Look at the left sidebar of your WordPress dashboard.

There are tons of free pre-made themes available in WordPress directory.

To browse these themes, go to “Appearance> Themes> Add”, search for the topic that suits your needs, and click the Install button.

For better understanding, I suggest you watch our video “How to create a WordPress website tutorial”.

Also, search plugins for “Plugins> Add New”.

Find and install the plugins you need. 3rd party plugins can also be installed from the ‘Upload Plugin’ section.

Step 4: You are ready!

Your website should be up to the last step. But there are a few more things that should be sorted out.

Under ‘Settings> General’: Set your site title and slogan.

Under ‘Settings> Read’: what should show your homepage and how many blog posts you want to display on a single page.

Under ‘Settings> Permalinks’: Determine what the URL structure of your blog post should look like.

Step 5: Plan Your Website Growth

Now you know the different types of web hosting and the best tools for building a website. But the journey does not end here. In fact, this is only the beginning!

Here are some tips to help you make your website more productive and just better:

  • Find your niche

Perhaps one of the most important things you have to do is choose a niche and the direction in which your site will develop. Without proper planning, everything can stop working very quickly.

  • Use Google Analytics

It can be difficult to make important decisions without having data to back them up. That is why collecting statistics is crucial if you want to succeed. One of the best tools for the job is Google Analytics. You will get useful information about your audience, for example, how users found your site, whether they made a purchase, how long they stayed on a particular page, and much more!

  • Configure the staging environment

An important factor in the growth of the site will be from time to time to update it and add new features. To do this effectively, you will need reviews of visitors/users.

  • Increase your safety

Currently, you can never be safe, especially with the various threats lurking on the Internet. The most common things that can affect your site are DoS / DDoS attacks, spam and one of the worst types of attacks when a malicious code or malware is “injected” due to lack of security.

To protect your creation from all these dangers, you can establish security measures, for example:

  • Use CAPTCHA (fights spam),
  • Limit login attempts (set 5-10 minute timeouts after several incorrect password assumptions),
  • Install a security plugin (such as Wordfence or Sucuri),
  • Install CloudFlare (not only protects your site from various attacks but also accelerates it).
  • Plan the next steps.

And last but not least: try to be a few steps ahead. If your website is business related, decide which pages you should include. If you are planning to create an e-commerce empire, think about your product and how to attract even more users.

4 — Be creative and believe in your success!

On WordPress there are hundreds of different themes and templates, so you can really find the perfect one for you and customize it as you prefer. So I decided to show you some of my favorite themes and I’ve found some websites, which successfully use them.
